Some thoughts on "American Elect 2012"

The question of whether or not to write an article on "American Elect 2012" was not an easy one for me to answer.  I am in no way affiliated with the site, nor the effort represented by the site , and thus do not wish to appear to be endorsing or promoting it for any other reason than I find it to be an interesting political development.  In essence, it represents an effort to put a "third party" candidate on the ballot in all fifty states based on input from "us", the American voting public.  At present, the nomination process is in full swing with, from what I can tell, the votes to be tallied on a country-wide, rather than state specific basis.  Obviously this will not be the case should the movement become a success as the election results themselves will be subject to state and federal regulation.  The site itself allows for nominations to be made, questions to be asked, and asks for member input. My interest is primarily in soliciting opinions from my readers as to what they think of the effort and whether it will have any significant impact.  There are those who suggest that "Big Money" is behind it, which would not be surprising as it would seem to take significant resources to make it work.  Perhaps Donald Trump, which is not one of the backers suggested, could be a beneficiary?  I do have some concerns that the effort might find it hard to find a truly viable candidate who would accept the nomination, perhaps realizing he/she might be burning some bridges as well, as acting as nothing more than a spoiler.  So, who might benefit from this effort?  Does it represent a viable alternative to politics as usual?  If elected, could the candidate work with other branches of government?  Do you agree with the requirement that the candidate pick a vice presidential candidate from the other party?  These are some of the questions I have, and would be interested in the thoughts of others.

Additional information can be found at their website.....If anyone knows of this violating one of the provisions of the CoH please let me know in a comment.  Thank you.

This is NOT an endorsement or an attempt to promote the site.

It IS an attempt to find out what other politically minded Viner's think.

I do not think that Americans Elect will have a significant effect on the process in 2012

The idea of candudates being selected on a national scope by popular vote has its appeals and the opinion exchange forum is also an interesting data gathering mechanism.

As to whether "big money" is behind it, the process seems to lack control and narrowness that would appeal to the "big money" interests and sounds decidedly not big money to me.

Regarding the vice president slot, I would rather see the vice president be the candidate who receives the second most popular votes in the presidential election

The obvious question is whether the candidate is liberal or conservative. The candidate would not win the election, but could determine the outcome. As a liberal, I would prefer a conservative 3rd party candidate. My guess is that conservatives would think otherwise.
